Tigers are the largest wild cats in the world. Sadly, hunting and habitat loss have put populations at risk, and today their range has been reduced to around 7% of its former size.

It is most recognisable for its dark vertical stripes on orange-brown fur. Stripes are likely advantageous for camouflage in vegetation. 

No two tigers have the same stripes. Since every tiger has their own pattern on their fur, they are all unique! A tiger's tail is about half the length of its body.

Males vary in total length from 250 to 360 cm. Adults can weigh up to 320kg. They mainly feed on large mammals such as deer, wild pigs, antelope and buffalo. Tigers are solitary hunters, and generally search for food alone at night.

Tigers are good swimmers! Unlike most members of the cat family, they like water and often cool off in pools or streams.

The Turan tiger/ Туранский тигр

The Turan tiger or Caspian tiger(Kaz. Тұран жолбарысы, Каспий жолбарысы, Lat. Panthera tigris virgata) was an extinct subspecies that inhabited the steppes and deserts of Central Asia, from the Amu Darya river basin to the shores of the Aral and Caspian seas. However, by the mid-20th century, intensive hunting and destruction of its natural habitat led to its complete extinction.

Kazakhstan has initiated efforts to reintroduce this predator to its historical habitat. A key step in this program is the creation of suitable living conditions for tigers in the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve.

The tiger restoration program was launched in 2010 with the support of an international team of scientists from Kazakhstan, Russia, the Netherlands, and other countries. The initiative is being implemented by the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in cooperation with organizations such as WWF, UNDP, and IUCN.
